SEO in Medway,
five towns that
Google reads as separate.
Medway is one place to the people who live here and five places to Google. Local SEO that wins the district searches and the town searches together, from a studio in Gillingham. From £300, with Foundation SEO free on every site I build.
Looking for a website rather than ranking an existing one? See web design in Medway.
Trading mainly in one town? SEO in Gillingham. Or SEO in Chatham.
Why Medway is different
Four things that decide a Medway search
Medway is a district of five towns that grew into each other, and that shape is what makes ranking across it awkward.
Google does not treat Medway as its five towns
Somebody searching "plumber medway" and somebody searching "plumber chatham" get different results, and a business that only ever says one of the two is missing the other search entirely. A site that only names its home town is invisible for the district searches; a site that only says Medway ranks weakly in every town. Winning here means naming both, properly, in the places Google reads.
Medway is also a river, and a valley that is not Medway
The name runs well beyond the district. The river starts in Sussex and passes Tonbridge and Maidstone, and the businesses along the Medway Valley at Aylesford and Snodland use the name freely without being in Medway at all. Your site and your Business Profile need to make clear which Medway you mean, with the towns and postcodes named, or Google fills the gap with guesses.
The map takes most of the clicks
For nearly every local search here the block of three businesses with a map sits above the ordinary results and takes the majority of the traffic. Position there depends on your Google Business Profile, its service area, its categories and a steady run of real reviews, more than on the website. A business ranked second in the ordinary results can still take almost nothing if the map is above it.
The Hoo Peninsula is part of it, and almost nobody names it
Hoo, High Halstow, Cliffe and the villages out to Grain are in Medway, and they search like a rural area: fewer competitors, longer trips, and a strong preference for whoever names the village. For a trade that covers the peninsula, saying so properly is one of the cheaper wins in the district.
The work
What I actually do, in order
Roughly this sequence, because each step is worth more once the one above it is done.
01
Set your service area properly on Google
The first job. A Google Business Profile with the towns you actually cover set as its service area, the right primary category, real photographs and hours that match reality. If the profile is the weak link I will tell you before selling you anything, because fixing it costs nothing and moves faster than the website.
02
One district page, and town pages that mean it
A clear Medway page for the district searches, and a section or page for each town you serve that is genuinely written for it. Never the same paragraph with the town name swapped: Google treats that as a doorway page and discounts it, which is worse than having nothing.
03
Make sure your pages are not competing with each other
When several of your own pages could answer the same search, Google tries them in turn and none of them settles. I check Search Console for exactly that, then point each search at the one page that should own it, with the links between your pages saying the same thing.
04
Consistent details everywhere you appear
Name, address and phone identical across your site, your Business Profile, Companies House, directories and any trade body listing. Dull, skipped by most people, and the thing that tells Google your listing and your website are the same business.
05
Schema so the details are machine readable
LocalBusiness and Service markup with every town named in the area served, breadcrumbs, and the links between them. This is the Advanced tier's structural work, and it puts your area, hours and reviews somewhere an AI answer or a rich result can read them.
06
Reporting you can check yourself
Search Console positions and impressions for your Medway searches and each town's, side by side, so you can see which towns are working and which are not. If something does not move I would rather say so than bury it under a chart.
What it costs
Three tiers, and one of them is free
The same three tiers wherever you are, because the price follows the job rather than the postcode. Full detail of what sits in each is on the main SEO page, so this is the short version.
Foundation
Keyword alignment, metadata, speed and the on-page basics, done as part of the build.
Free with every site
Advanced
The structural work: unified schema, breadcrumbs and the entity links that make your details readable.

Questions
Medway SEO questions
Are you based in Medway?+
Yes. My studio is in Gillingham, so every one of the five towns is a short drive away. If you would rather sit down with someone than email them, that is easy here.
How much does SEO cost in Medway?+
The price follows the job, not the postcode. Foundation SEO is included free with every website I build. WebOws Advanced, the structural schema and breadcrumb work, is a one-off from £300. WebOws Performance SEO, full AEO and GEO visibility, comes with the Performance monthly plans, from £200 a month on a 12-month minimum, where I build the site on Astro and keep it up for you.
Should I target Medway or my own town?+
Both, because they are different searches. Naming your town wins the people nearest you; naming Medway catches the district searches and the customers who think of the Towns as one place. What loses is naming neither and hoping Google works it out.
Do I need a separate page for every Medway town?+
Only for the towns you can write something real about. A page per town that genuinely differs works; five copies with the name swapped does not, and can drag the rest of the site down. For many businesses one strong Medway page with a properly written section per town is the better answer.
How long before I see results?+
Three to six months for the competitive district terms, sometimes weeks for the map if your Business Profile has been left alone for years, because that can move quickly. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is either targeting searches nobody makes or about to do something you will have to undo.
I am in Chatham or Gillingham. Which page should I read?+
Read that town's page as well as this one. The Gillingham page covers its football club and Dorset problem, and the Chatham page its seasons and the American Chathams. This page is about ranking across the district as a whole.
I need a website too, not just SEO.+
Then start with the website, because Foundation SEO comes with it at no extra cost and there is little point optimising a site you are about to replace. My Medway web design page covers what a build costs and what is included.
