When a page builder
is not the
right tool.
Custom-coded web applications, client portals, booking systems and internal tools, for the businesses whose needs a website platform was never built to model. Scoped and quoted individually, not off a price list.

Is this you?
Most businesses need a website. Some need software.
A page builder like Wix Studio is the right tool for the large majority of the businesses I work with, and I say so plainly on every call - a five-page brochure site does not need custom code. This page is for the ones where the answer is different: where the thing you need to build has rules, logic or data behind it that a content platform was never designed to hold.
Client or member portals
A login, private data per user, and views that differ depending on who is signed in - not something a public content site does.
Booking rules a platform can't model
Multi-resource scheduling, tiered pricing, or availability logic specific to how your business actually operates.
Internal dashboards and admin tools
Software your team uses to run the business, not something a customer ever sees - built around your actual workflow.
Integrations between systems
Your accounting software, your CRM and your website should not be three places doing the same job by hand.
Data-heavy tools
A catalogue, directory or database-backed tool where the content is the product, not a page describing one.
Not sure which you are?
Most calls start here. Tell me what you're trying to do and I will say plainly whether it needs this or a standard build.
What gets built
Custom web application development, in plain terms
Five kinds of project come up most often. Each is built the same way: from scratch, in code, around your data and your rules - not configured out of a page builder's plugin store.
Client and member portals
A login, a database of your customers or members, and a private area that shows each person only their own data - invoices, documents, bookings, progress, whatever your business tracks per client. Built with proper authentication and access control from the start, not a shared password bolted onto a normal page.
Booking and scheduling systems
Off-the-shelf booking plugins assume one kind of appointment. A custom booking system handles the actual rules your business runs on: multiple resources booked at once, tiered or seasonal pricing, buffer times, staff availability, or a franchise structure where each location needs its own calendar - modelled properly rather than worked around.
Admin dashboards and internal tools
Software nobody outside your team ever sees, built around how the team actually works: a live view of jobs, stock, orders or leads, pulled from your own database rather than exported to a spreadsheet by hand, with logins and permissions for who on your team can see and change what. The proof section below is a real one of these, built and used for this business's own admin work rather than mocked up to sell against.
System integrations
Your accounting software, your CRM, your booking system and your website usually all hold a piece of the same information, and someone is probably retyping it between them right now. A custom integration talks to each system's API directly, so a booking, a sale or a new customer only has to be entered once.
Data-heavy tools and directories
A searchable catalogue, a directory, a pricing or availability tool - anything where the content itself is the product, backed by a real database with proper search and filtering, rather than a long list of manually edited content-platform pages.
How it works
Scoped properly, because it has to be
A website has a fairly predictable shape, which is what makes a fixed price list honest. Custom software does not - a single-location booking tool and a multi-tenant portal are different projects wearing the same name. So this route starts with a proper scoping conversation rather than a number on a page.
Scoping call, no charge
What you're trying to do, what systems it needs to talk to, and an honest read on whether this route is actually the right one.
Written scope and fixed quote
What gets built, what it integrates with, and a price you agree before any work starts - the same principle as every build on this site.
Build, with real milestones
You see it working as it's built, not just at the end - the same way this dashboard was built and shown off, module by module.
Launch, then real support
Handed over with the access and documentation to keep running it, and support scoped for software rather than a website's 30-day window.
Questions
Questions about custom builds
Not what you need? See the standard website builds from £800, or the full FAQs page.
How is this different from your normal website builds?+
The £800-£1,300 builds on /web-design are on Wix Studio: fast, genuinely custom-designed, and the right choice for the large majority of businesses. This is for the specific cases that platform cannot serve at all - a booking engine with rules Wix does not model, a client portal behind a login, a dashboard pulling from your own systems - built from scratch in code rather than assembled from platform blocks.
What counts as "bespoke software" here?+
A web application with real logic behind it, not a content site. Client or member portals, internal dashboards and admin tools, booking or scheduling systems with rules specific to your business, integrations between systems that do not talk to each other today, and data-heavy tools built around how your business actually works rather than a generic workflow.
How is a custom build priced?+
On application, after a scoping call. A booking system for a single location and a multi-tenant portal for a franchise are not the same project, and pricing either from a fixed menu would either overcharge the simple one or undercharge the complex one. You get a fixed quote once the scope is actually understood, the same principle as every build on this site, just applied to work too varied for a price list.
What do you actually build this in?+
Modern, boring-on-purpose infrastructure: Astro and Cloudflare Workers, with a real database behind it rather than a page builder holding the data. That is the same stack this business runs its own client dashboard on, so it is not an unfamiliar technology chosen for a client and never used since.
Can you integrate with systems we already use?+
Usually, yes - most business software (accounting, CRM, booking, payment) exposes an API, and that is the door a custom build walks through. Bring the systems you use to the scoping call and I will tell you plainly what connects cleanly and what needs a workaround.
How long does a custom build take?+
Longer than a website, because there is more to get right: a straightforward internal tool or portal is often four to eight weeks, and a genuinely complex multi-system build can run longer. You get a real timeline at the quote stage, not a template estimate.
Do you build mobile apps as well as web applications?+
The work here is web applications - built to run in a browser on desktop and mobile, not compiled into an App Store listing. For most of the client portals, booking systems and dashboards this page covers, a well-built web application does the job without the extra cost and approval process of native apps. If a native app genuinely is the right call, say so on the scoping call and I will tell you plainly.
What happens after launch - do you just hand it over?+
No. Software keeps needing attention after launch in a way a brochure website mostly does not: data grows, the business changes, and something you integrate with updates its own API. Support is scoped at the quote stage around that reality, not the 30-day window a website gets, and agreed up front rather than negotiated after something breaks.
Do you only build for businesses in Kent?+
Kent is where I am based and where most client work sits, but a custom build is not location-dependent the way a shopfront redesign might be - scoping calls, builds and support all run the same whether you are down the road or elsewhere in the UK.
Not a template job?
Let's scope
what you actually need.
A free scoping call is enough to tell you honestly whether this is a custom build or a standard website wearing a complicated description. No obligation, no hard sell.
