If you are about to build a website you have probably narrowed it to Wix or WordPress. They are the two biggest names and people online will argue passionately for both, usually without much interest in your actual situation.

Here is an honest comparison aimed at a small business owner who just wants a site that works.

The short answer

For most small businesses, Wix. It is quicker to build, easier to maintain, and hosting, security and updates are handled for you.

WordPress is more powerful and more flexible. That power comes with more setup, more upkeep, and usually someone technical on call. For a large or genuinely custom project it earns its keep. For a local business that wants a professional site without the ongoing hassle, it is more machine than most people need.

Ease of use

This is Wix's clearest advantage. You build visually, and once it is live you can change text and images yourself without touching code.

WordPress can do this too with a page builder, but it is fiddlier, and when something breaks, a plugin conflict or an update gone wrong, you often need help. For an owner who wants to change a price on a Tuesday evening without it becoming a project, Wix is considerably less stressful.

Cost and upkeep

On paper WordPress looks cheaper because the software is free. In practice you pay for hosting, a theme, plugins, security, backups and someone to keep it all current. Those costs continue indefinitely.

SEO and speed

Both rank perfectly well, and this is the myth worth killing.

WordPress has a reputation for SEO flexibility, but a WordPress site carrying ten heavy plugins is slower and worse for search than a clean Wix Studio build. Modern Wix Studio gives full control of titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, schema and page speed.

WordPress wins on raw flexibility. Complex membership systems, large shops, genuinely bespoke functionality: its ecosystem is unmatched and I would not pretend otherwise.

Wix if you want a professional site that launches quickly, is easy to maintain and costs a predictable amount. That describes most small businesses.

WordPress if you have complex custom needs and the budget for ongoing technical support.
